Basic car paint technology process
To paint a car you need to prepare and conduct a lot of stages before starting to paint the car. However, depending on the vehicle's shape, size, capacity, painting technical requirements and the level of automation of the customer, some stages of the paint line can be eliminated or incorporated into the paint job. another paragraph, or in addition. But basically, the basic car paint technology process consists of 7 steps:
- Surface pre-treatment before painting PT (Pre-Treatment).
- Apply electrolytic coating (ED) (Electrophoretic Deposition).
- Dry the ED electrolytic coating in the oven.
- Pumping glue to seal the chassis (Sealer), polish (Sanding) and cover the sound (Sound Dumper). Primer and top coat are applied in robotic paint booths and dried in an oven.
- Inspect (Inspection) and repair (Repair).
Working principle of car paint line
Pre-treatment PT (Pre-treatment)
Before the car's frame was painted, it went through metalworking processes. Therefore, before painting it is necessary to treat the surface. The first station in the painting process is pretreatment, where the chassis is completely immersed in hot water, degreasing, chemical baths, and often phosphate to remove impurities and adhered dirt. on the surface to prepare for the ED electrolytic coating step.
Electrophoretic Deposition ED (Electrophoretic Deposition)
After the car's frame has been surface-treated, the car frame will be moved to the next step, which is electrolytic paint, also known as negative electrode paint or DI electric paint. This process coats a layer of anti-corrosion primer by submerging the entire body of the vehicle in an electrically conductive bath to ensure a thin layer of paint that covers the entire bodywork, including the nooks and crannies.
After the electrolytic coating process, the residue on the surface and inside the electrolytic paint and powder coating needs to be treated and restored to cleanliness. Therefore, the UF (Ultra Filtration) filter system helps to restore cleanliness, and restore quality by 80-90% after paint recycling, thus saving the cost of repurchasing electrolytic paint and avoiding environmental pollution. environment caused by the discharge of wastewater.
Indicators of metal components in water, bacteria, moisture, and pH can also change the original paint color, oxidize, etc., so it needs to be removed. The DI water treatment system has the effect of improving longevity and creating high gloss, not being corroded by chemicals and affected by chemical agents, ensuring the best ED coating.
Drying the ED electrolytic coating in the oven (ED Oven)
Products after being cleaned from the previous stage are brought to the ED coating drying line by a conveyor system (conveyor), and lifting system (hoist, cranes). The product is put through the inlet into the drying chamber at a temperature of about 150 degrees Celsius with a drying system that provides heat from gas burners, oil burners (combustion chamber), and ovens (Oven). Each car model will have its temperature and drying time parameters, so a PLC controller is required to control the above indicators. At the end of the drying oven, there will be a cooling system to help reduce the temperature of the car body before going to the next stage.
Pumping sealer (Sealer), polishing (Sanding), and soundproofing (Sound Dumper)
In automotive parts, the undercarriage is the place that is most affected and impacted by the external environment. Being located close to the road surface causes the undercarriage to be constantly in contact, affected by sand, gravel, dirt, water, grease, and other dirt from the road surface. The result is not only dirty chassis but also easy to scratch, corrode, rust, and deform.
At this stage, the body of the car will be taken to the area of glue sealing, sealing and spraying PVC under the chassis and soundproofing to help protect the car's undercarriage from the effects of harmful factors from the environment as well as air conditioning. moving event. Before going to the next stage, the unsatisfactory areas will be polished by sanding machines in the polishing room.
Paint Primer and Top Coat (Base + Clear Coat) in Paint Booth paint booths and dry in an oven
At this stage, the paint spraying robot is precisely programmed with the flow, pressure, velocity, and distance according to each color type and profile of each vehicle, under the support of the paint mixing system (mixing). ), paint dust suppression, air conditioning system, and ventilation.
Primer paint is formulated to smooth ED-based surfaces, protect against rust and create a bond between coats, helping to detect any coating irregularities. and can be sanded easily. Primer can be tinted to match the finish.
Base coat: This is the paint that gives color to the surface of the car, and gives the main color to the body of the car, can be one layer or many layers depending on the nature of the car paint color that the manufacturer or desired customer.
Clear Coat: It is the outermost layer of paint that protects the vehicle's surface from external factors such as sun, rain, snow, UV radiation, dirt, etc.
Check (Inspection) and repair (Repair) before moving to the assembly line
This is the last stage of the car paint line, currently at this stage still mainly uses humans with the support of equipment or collaborative robots.
